Why 99% Of You Should NOT Use WordPress As A CMS

If you frequent social networks, you’ll have seen a fair amount of buzz in the last few months about using WordPress as a CMS. I’m here to tell you that for 99% of you out there, that would be a bad idea. Don’t get me wrong. I love WordPress. I have blogs that use WordPress, including this one. I even have one non-blog that uses WordPress - as a CMS! But that doesn’t mean everyone should run out and use WordPress as a CMS, and I’m here to tell you why.

Why should most people not use WordPress as a CMS? Because it is decidedly NOT easy to do so for the average Joe. Perhaps in time it will be, but for now, it’s kind of a pain in the caboose to set it up as a proper content management system, that is not “date-focused”. If you have experience writing plugins or designing WP themes, you can probably get it set up without too much hassle. But if you are just the average person wanting to manage a “non-blog” site easily, don’t fall for the current hype of using WordPress as a CMS. You’ll just end up being frustrated as you try to get your new site up and running.

I just feel that it is necessary to counter the current enthusiasm with a dose of reality. Unless you are fairly well versed in mucking with WordPress themes and code, don’t attempt to use it as a CMS. Stick with a content management system that was designed for that purpose.
