Using Themes For A CMS Without Official Theme Communities
Written by webchicklet on April 2, 2008 – 1:03 pm -One of the reasons people love using products such as WordPress or Drupal is that they can easily find thousands of design templates (usually for free), even if those products may not be exactly what would be best for them to use. The good news is that even if the CMS product that is perfect for your needs doesn’t come with communities of free themes, you probably don’t need to despair. More than likely, you can use almost any HTML/CSS-based design template for your CMS-based design! All you have to do is make minor modifications, which your CMS product will outline for you. In most cases, all you have to do is insert short tags into the code in the places you want certain types of content. For example, you might need to replace the menu code in your HTML template with something like this: {menu}
Pretty simple, right? Of course, the particular CMS product you choose will have documentation on how to implement standard HTML/CSS designs into it, so you’ll need to read the docs for the specifics. But what this means in the broader sense is that you can virtually get design templates in even more places! Any design repository site will do. Want a great place to start? Try Open Source Web Design first and then head over to Free CSS Templates. If neither site has a template you want, just do a search on your favorite search engine for “free css templates” or “free web templates”, etc. Once you find a template you like, follow your CMS’s instructions for modifying it for its system, and you’re on your way to the design of your choice.
